Motherhood is Hard Some Mornings

Today I woke up at 3:55am feeling defeated and depleted. I had to go get in line at 4:15am at the YMCA parking lot to register my 5 year old for after-school care. You see, today was the first day of registration and there were a limited amount of after-school care spots at our public school for next year, so I had to make sure to be one of the first people to register.

So here I am at 4:15am in the morning of the YMCA parking lot waiting for it to open at 5:30am. (I had to drag my kids with me because my husband was traveling for work.) And I wasn’t the first person there. Some people even spent the night!

Motherhood is hard. Parenthood is hard. And all the various doctor appointments, registration, classes, paperwork, etc. are hard. But you know what, my children taught me a valuable lesson this morning. There is joy in everything.

As we stood there in the freezing cold of the morning, my children were delighted at the adventure to be up “in the middle of the night” as they put it. They made friends with a kind man who bought donuts for everyone in line. We met an amazing woman and mother who just moved into the neighborhood and who’s daughter will be in school with my son. We are already making plans for a park play date.

And my son got a spot at the YMCA for after school care! Yay! It was a lesson that the early bird not only gets the worm, but also gets a donut, a fun adventure, makes some memories with kids, and makes a new mommy friend. We will all be tired today at school and work, but it was worth it.
