When Did we Start Feeling Guilty about Taking Care of Ourselves?

I am not sure about you, but the moment I became a mother, 100% of my focus was on others. The focus was on my new baby, my husband, my corporate job, etc. And my badge of honor was running myself into the ground. I kid you not.

I did not take care of myself. That means I didn’t eat good, I didn’t exercise, and I certainly didn’t do anything at any kind of salon. I mean, I didn’t get my nails done for 3 years after my 2nd child was born. 3 years!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But you know what I learned? You have to take care of yourself first BEFORE you can take care of others. Just like they tell you on the airplane right after they teach you how to buckle the seat belt. “In the event of a drop in cabin pressure, secure your oxygen mask first, before putting it on children.” Did you hear that mamas? Take care of yourself first, so that you can take care of others.

Today I took a lunch break from work, and got a hair cut at a salon. It’s something that 8 months ago, I would have put off, or not done. But you know what, I feel like a million bucks.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gone is the time where I would feel guilty for taking an hour for me. Ladies, take an hour, and do whatever it is that makes you feel good. You’ll be a better mother and wife for it.
